Pre-Monsoon desilting of St. Inez Creek commences amid environmental concerns

Authorities have initiated the annual cleaning and desilting of St. Inez Creek near the Panjim Inox, signalling preparations for the impending monsoon season. Using heavy machinery like excavators, the water resources department (WRD) began the crucial task of clearing debris and silt from the creek on Monday morning, aiming to facilitate the unimpeded flow of water from the Madovi River towards the Tonca area.

While this routine maintenance activity is essential for preventing blockages and flooding during the monsoon, concerns have arisen regarding the disposal of waste accumulated during the cleaning process. Waste materials, including plastic debris and tree remnants, were observed being deposited on the footpath adjacent to the main road, creating inconvenience for pedestrians and emitting foul odours in the vicinity.

With Inox serving as a prominent destination for moviegoers and event attendees, the accumulation of waste could tarnish the area’s appeal and negatively impact public perception. Urgent action is required from authorities to promptly clear the waste and mitigate potential environmental and aesthetic repercussions, ensuring the area remains clean and accessible for residents and visitors alike.
