Pre-monsoon work to be completed before end of May: MMC CO

New system for pre-monsoon work this year as ward wise rotation system employed; Desilting of nullahs will be taken up on priority basis; Hotel discharging waste into drains will be sent notices;Sanitation inspectors to inspect hotels in the town

Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer, Deepali Naik spoke to Herald regarding the pre monsoon work in Margao town. She explained that all the work will be completed before the end of May and that only about ten percent of the work was remaining, while everything else was completed.
The plan to engage 50 daily wage labourers to carry out this pre-monsoon work and the use of a ward wise rotation system in order for these workers to carry out the work and ensure that they are completed within the deadlines was given due credit.
In the past, the system was such that only a few workers used to be allotted to each ward in order to carry out the pre-monsoon work. Hence, this often took too long to complete and the work would be half done or would take a lot of time to complete while in the meantime, the monsoons would hit the state and then work would come to a standstill. In the new system however, the civic body has deployed the entire group of workers to one ward so that the work can be completed in double quick time. After work in one ward is completed, the workers will then move over to the next ward and finish the work there within the set deadline.
“We have also written to the Water Resources Department to undertake desilting of big nullahs in the town on a priority basis. Additionally, a joint meeting between the Public Works Department (PWD), Forest Department, Electricity Department and District Administration will be convened soon in order to review the status of all the pre-monsoon work taking place in Margao,” Naik mentioned.
Another issue plaguing Margao town is that of hotels which release a lot of waste into the nullahs after the drains are cleaned by the workers. Naik explained that various notices have been issued to the hotels that were caught dumping waste in open drains. Further, a sanitary inspector has also been instructed to go around the town and inspect all hotels.
