VASCO: Taking suo motu cognizance of a Herald report published on Thursday’s edition on spillage of coal along the railway tracks, the Mormugao Deputy Collector Mahadev Arundekar has written to the Mormugao Port Trust asking the port authorities to take measures to stop spillage of coal during transportation by road or by rail.
On Thursday, Herald published a ground zero report on spillage of coal along the tracks wherein it exposed how the spillage of coal along the railway tracks was seen very high and how the availability of coal cubes along the tracks is rampant.
“I have read the Herald report on spillage of coal along the tracks. Since the issue is serious as coal spillage leads to pollution, I have written a letter to MPT to take all precautionary measures while transporting coal cargo from the port. I have also given directions to the MPT to comply with the directions of railway ministry and to ensure that the coal cargo is covered properly so that spillage does not take place on the tracks during transportation,” Arundekar told Herald.
Meanwhile, Herald again decided to check the ground situation on spillage of coal on the tracks and walked along portions of the tracks near Shantinagar Vasco, at Dabolim and Sancoale railway station to see whether coal spillage along the tracks is reduced or not.
During the inspection, Herald noticed rampant spillage of coal cubes along the tracks, as the authorities concerned failed to clear the same from the tracks.
During the visit on Thursday, it was again noticed that cube size coal were seen spilled along the tracks. Herald even collected a bag of coal on a stretch of ten meters to highlight the quantum of spillage taking place during transportation by rail.
Similar situation was at other parts of railway tracks visited by Herald.
