PANJIM: The district administration has stepped up precautionary measures along the mining belt to rule out any flooding during the monsoon considering dumps lying unattended at several locations.
“The dumps which are collecting water may give way and there are possibilities of flooding. The mining authorities should be reminded to inspect and verify that no casualty takes place due to flooding,” North Goa Collector Nila Mohanan said.
The meeting discussed appointing WRD, deputy collectors and mamlatdars to take up the task. Bicholim and Sattari are taluaks where mining activity was rampant in the north district before its abrupt ban in September 2012.
In all, 750 million tonnes of ore are lying in dumps across the state. The iron-ore rejects have been piled up for the last few decades. The Supreme Court appointed committee will soon be coming with a plan on how to handle these dumps.
