MARGAO: Beef finally made its presence felt in the cold storages dotting Salcette taluka, but there’s no relief yet for beef eaters with prices more or less remaining unchanged.
While ordinary beef was priced at Rs 220 a kg, the much-sought after ‘bhendi’ beef was quoted in the market at around Rs 250-260 a kilogram. Cold storage owners said the prices can come down only if they Goa Meat Complex sells the produce at a reduced rate. “Right now we are selling bhendi beef at around 260 a kilogram. If the GMC reduces the rates further, we will be in a position to pass on the benefit to the ultimate consumers”, informed a city-based cold storage owner.
A bakery owner said that resumption of beef is welcome news for the traders and people like him engaged in the production of beef items. He has, however, hastened to add that the ultimate consumers will be a satisfied lot only if the prices are within their reach.
Chairman of the Goa Meat Complex Lyndon Monteiro told the media that the meat complex has honoured its word of supplying hygienic beef to the cold storages. He said the supply should meet the requirements of beef eating Goans.
