PANJIM: Vice President (VP) of India M Venkaiah Naidu  said that he is on a mission to campaign for promotion and protection of mother tongue across India.

Addressing the 32nd Convocation Ceremony of Goa University on Monday, Naidu said he is of the firm opinion that primary education of the child has to be in mother tongue.

“We must focus our attention on learning, promoting and practicing mother tongue. Be it Konkani, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada….etc anything. Any language that has come from mother’s womb must be promoted because language and emotions go hand in hand,” he said.

“We have to understand that if language goes, the culture also goes,” Naidu commented, while adding that a child can learn as many languages he or she wants later but one has to first learn their own mother tongue.

Naidu was speaking in the presence of Goa Governor and Chancellor Satya Pal Malik and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.  A total of 10,670 students were awarded degrees.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor said education is an important factor in any society and primary education is the base of our life that qualifies us for higher education and facilitates contribution towards our family, society and the world.  “The perspective of higher education has become comprehensive, and its objective is to not limited to just getting a degree or certificate. In today’s scenario, the significance of higher education is linked to the society,” he said.
