Probe into temple thefts big flop, say representatives
Accuse Home Dept of sleeping over inputs
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, JAN 11
Terming ongoing investigations into the spate of temple thefts in South Goa a big flop, representatives of major temples from South Goa on Tuesday squarely blamed the Home department for the rising thefts by not taking prompt action on inputs received from the Karwar police.
Around 50 representatives of Temples from the district called on the district Collector, South G P Naik and demanded to know the progress of investigations into the thefts and burglaries.
They pointed out that the Karwar police had written a specific letter to the Home department and the police giving names of Temples that may be targeted by the burglars, but lamented that the government did not act promptly by strengthening security at the places of worship.
That’s not all. The representatives lamented that the police investigations have not led the investigations anywhere and added that the police teams are dispatched outside the state only when someone is arrested across the border.
“We have not seen the Goa police conducting independent investigations into the Temple burglaries”, stated Krishna Gauns Desai, secretary of the Chandreshwar Bhuthnath Temple, which was burgled last year.
The delegation demanded that the government constitute a 30-member police headed by Superintendent of Police, DySP, four PIs, five PSIs and policemen for dedicated investigations into the Temple burglaries.
Terming the ongoing investigations into the Temple thefts and burglaries a farce and a mere eyewash, the delegation called upon the district Collector to convey the sentiments of the people to the government to take prompt measures to strengthen security arrangements and detect the cases.
After giving the delegation a patient hearing, the district Collector, G P Naik assured to convey their sentiments and requests to the government for consideration.
He told the representatives that the issue will be deliberated at length at a meeting to be chaired by the Chief Minister.
