Probe ordered into enrollment of non-Goan casino employees

Khaunte had earlier lodged a complaint over the addition of 820 names to the Porvorim constituency electoral rolls

PANJIM: The North Goa District Election Officer (DEO) has sought a detailed report on the enrollment of electorates, from the mamlatdars of Mapusa and Porvorim, following a complaint by Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte alleging illegal enrollment of around 820 names of people from North Eastern States in the electoral roll of Porvorim assembly constituency.
Last week, Porvorim MLA Khaunte, had filed a complaint before the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) seeking immediate investigation into the alleged illegal enrollment of people from Mizoram and Manipur, working in casinos, into the electoral roll. A police complaint in this regard has also been lodged.
The CEO has forwarded the complaint to North DEO and Collector IAS R Menaka for investigating and submitting the report. “The investigation has already started into the complaint and I have sought a detailed report on the enrollment from the Election Registration Officers (ERO), the mamlatdars of Mapusa and Porvorim,” Menaka told Herald.
She said that once the report is submitted by EROs, the same would be forwarded to CEO, with their views, who would take a decision accordingly. She added that the CEO is the final authority in this regard.
Meanwhile, sources informed that the owner of the casino, where these alleged voters were employed, is also under scanner of CEO. “Once a detailed report from the DEO is available, the picture would be clear. There is a possibility that a notice could be issued to the concerned casino owner seeking his reply,” sources said.
Khaunte had said that the entire enrollment process, which has been done online, is through a single computer system.
Following the complaint by Khaunte, a large number of those people, who had enrolled earlier, rushed to the Mapusa Mamlatdar office with affidavits seeking deletion of their names from the electoral roll.
