PANJIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Wednesday once again brought up the issue of restoring the temples that were allegedly destroyed by the Portuguese.
Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, Sawant said that the Department of Archives and Archaeology is working on the details related to the process of restoring temples which were destroyed during the Portuguese colonial era.
The State government has made a budgetary allocation of Rs 20 crore for restoration of temples. This was also one of BJP’s election planks in the run up to the recent 2022 State elections.
“At many places in Goa, we find several temples in dilapidated and neglected conditions. During the Portuguese regime, there was a systematic effort to destroy these cultural centres. Considering tourism development, we have made a provision of Rs 20 crore for reconstruction and restoration of these temples and sites,” Sawant had said in his budget speech in the Legislative Assembly.
