PONDA: Property worth about Rs 1 lakh was gutted in a fire at a scrap yard near a pharmaceutical factory at Bethora-Ponda on Sunday.
Timely intervention of the fire personnel saved the godown belonging to a petroleum company where a large quantity of LPG refilled gas cylinders are stored.
The fire personnel fought hard to douse the fire and luckily the fire could not reach the godown, which is just 5 mtrs away from the fire incident site.
According to Ponda fire personnel officers Shailesh Gavde and B Usgaonokar, the incident took place at about 2.30 pm and considering the gas cylinder godown, four fire tenders were pressed into service to control the fire and it took almost two hours to douse the fire. Two fire tenders from Kundaim were also called.
Fire sources informed that the exact cause of the fire was not known. Plastics, drums with oil, wooden and other material including tyres that were stored in the scrap yard were gutted in the fire.
Fire personnel Babi Pilarnkar, Chandrakant Malshekar, B Mapsekar and others took part in the operations.
