PANJIM: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ridiculed the Congress saying the latter should not dream of forming a government in Goa after they lost the opportunity last year.
“The Congress party is losing its hold all over the country. It has lost elections in many States. The party should also not dream of forming government in Goa as it had the opportunity but could not grab it. Their strength in the House was instead reduced from 17 to 16,” BJP President Vinay Tendulkar told reporters on the sidelines of a day-long fast held at Azad Maidan on Thursday, to protest the Parliament logjam during the Budget session.
Referring to the recent poll victories of the party, he said BJP has managed to win even North Eastern states, some of which were won in alliance with other parties.
Tendulkar, also a Rajya Sabha MP, maintained that the BJP-led government in the State is doing well and reiterated that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will probably return to Goa next month.
Lok Sabha MPs Shripad Naik and Narendra Sawaikar, who also joined the nationwide hunger strike, slammed the Congress for playing a disruptive role in the opposition. “Congress is one of the major obstructions to development. BJP was ready for debate on every issue they demanded during the Budget session but the party (Congress) continued to disrupt the sessions. We condemn this and hence, all three MPs have joined the party across the country to observe the day long fast,” Sawaikar said.
Supporting his views, Naik added that the BJP MPs had tabled questions related to the mining closure order by Supreme Court in February. “But the Congress disrupted all the 23 days of the session. Our questions during the Zero Hour on the same issue could also not be raised because of these disruptions,” he said.
The day-long protest at Azad Maidan saw several present and past BJP MLAs joining the MPs.
