Protesting taxi owners get permission to continue strike

PANJIM: A day after North Goa Collector Ajit Roy revoked permission for continuing protest at Azad Maidan citing violation of Section 144 CrPC, the striking taxi operators approached the authority seeking fresh permission while assuring to adhere to the law.

The taxi operators, demanding scrapping of GoaMiles, have now been allowed to continue their strike till April 10.

In the fresh application for permission, the taxi operators assured the district administration and the police to abide by all the COVID-19 protocols, including restricting their attendance to not more than 200.

Roy had revoked the permission to striking taxi operators for violating Section 144 CrPC in force in view of rising COVID-19 cases. The order was based on Panjim police report that the attendance of striking taxi operators had exceeded 800.

As per the fresh order, the taxi operators will adhere to all the COVID-19 protocols such as wearing masks, maintaining social distance and not exceeding 200 persons besides other mandatory protocols. The order is valid up to April 10, Saturday.

Meanwhile, the agitated taxi operators have warned the government that if the protest spills on the roads, they will not be held responsible for the act post-April 10. “If the government does not heed to our demand by Saturday, we do not take the responsibility if the youth take the protest on the streets,” said one of them from Azad Maidan on Friday.
