PANJIM: Even as government has enhanced the rate per student per day for providing the mid-day meal, Education Department sees providing lunch more viable if government decides to implement full-day school as envisaged under the National Education Policy (NEP).

The Interim Report II for the NEP implementation has been submitted to the State government by the task force as the Directorate of Education is planning to implement the NEP for nursery classes from the next academic year.
Director of Education, Shailesh Zingde said, “The task force committee has submitted the interim report II to the State government. The final report of all the aspects may be submitted within next 15 days which will enable us to start work.”
When asked regarding the changes that the mid-day meal scheme may see in the advent of National Education Policy, Zingde said, “Suppose full day schooling starts in Goa on lines of the rest of the country we can fit it in the cost. However, in Goa we provide breakfast to students which makes a bit difficult to fit it in the cost. But, dal and rice which is the standard provision in full day schooling can be fit in cost.”
Informing that the department has done all the ground work for implementing the NEP, the Director said, “After the government accepts the reports we will proceed with the implementation of the NEP. National target is to completely implement the NEP in Goa by 2030. However, we are in a position to do it by the year 2026. The Department is planning to implement the NEP for nursery education from next academic year.”
