OLD GOA: In a gruesome incident that provoked an equally violent retaliation, a 65-year-old retired sanitary inspector from Dhulapi-Corlim was allegedly murdered by an unidentified man, believed to be a mentally unsound migrant worker, in broad daylight at Calvaddo-Corlim on Saturday morning.
An irate mob then mercilessly assaulted the accused and he later died of injuries at the GMC hospital at Bambolim.
Speaking to Herald, eyewitnesses informed that the incident took place sometime between 10.30 am and 10.45 am, when Kashinath Dhulapkar was proceeding on his scooter (GA-01-A-2810) from his home at Dhulapi to Carambolim for some work.
“As he reached Calvaddo at Corlim, the accused struck him with a wooden stick. Dhulapkar lost control of his scooter and fell into the field,” said a resident.
“Even before Dhulapkar could understand what was happening, the accused struck him with a big stone twice on his head, resulting in his instant death,” the resident added.
When some women residing in homes in the vicinity tried to come to the rescue of the victim, the accused started pelting stones at them, forcing the women to retreat to their homes in safety.
A short while later, other residents rushed to the site on hearing the news and they caught hold of the accused.
“The angry mob then gave vent to their anger by mercilessly assaulting the accused, before tying him with a rope and handing him over to the police,” said the resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“It was only this morning that we saw him roaming aimlessly within a radius of around 20 metres at the site of the incident,” said the resident.

“He also broke a sugarcane stalk from one of the houses and was seen eating the case,” the resident added.
Old Goa PI Krishna Sinari told Herald that the police have not been able to identify the accused and investigation is underway to ascertain his identity.
