Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has invited public opinion on the Western Ghats ecology.
The letter written by the ministry to environmentalists and individuals posted on www.moef.gov.in states that the ministry would like to invite all concerned people to share their own perceptions as to what areas on the Western Ghats should be identified as ecologically sensitive areas.
The ministry too intends to know why people feel that these are ecologically sensitive areas and what type of regulations should be put in place if the area were to be formally declared as ecologically sensitive.
“Alternatively, people might state that some areas on the Western Ghats should not be identified as ecologically sensitive,” the letter adds.
The MoEF has specified that members of local bodies like zilla panchayats, MLAs and member of parliaments, journalists, social workers and general public should respond to their appeal.
To make the things easy for the people not well versed with English, the ministry has said that the suggestions can also be made in Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam.
