PERNEM: In a tragic accident, a 47-year-old man was killed and eight others were injured when a Eco van hit a truck at Patradevi, Pernem checkpost on the Mumbai-Goa Highway.
According to the Pernem police, the accident occurred near Patradevi checkpost wherein Eco van from Pune while proceeding towards Banda side first hit a motorcycle, then a scooter and ultimately ended up hitting a truck from behind.
The deceased has been identified as Kantilal Vithal Shinde (47), a resident of Shindewasti, Pune.
The impact was such that the rear guard of the truck was broken and the front part of the Eco van was damaged. The driver and another person sitting in front of the car remained trapped in the ill-fated vehicle.
On hearing the news of the accident, the locals rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the injured. In all, eight persons including three men, two women, three minor children were injured while, minor girls escaped unhurt. Three have been admitted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Bambolim while, other were treated at the primary health centre, Banda.
The Pernem police conducted the panchanama and are conducting further investigations.
