PORVORIM: Public Works Department (electrical) has commenced the work to erect electricity poles from Alto Porvorim Bazaar junction to Hotel Green Park Junction at Guirim.
Speaking to Herald, the PWD (electrical) officials informed that they received instructions from the State government through PWD (highways) in July 2013 to send estimates to erect electricity poles and lamps along the distance of 3 kms from Alto Porvorim Bazaar junction till Hotel Green Park, Guirim.
The officials said the Mapusa office prepared the estimates and forwarded it to the higher authorities and upon receipt of clearance from the PWD minister they started erection of electricity poles and lamps.
“In all, 95 electricity poles with lamps will be installed along the stretch of National Highway 17 and the estimated cost is about Rs 70 lakh. As per the guidelines, the illumination level at highways should be 30 Lux minimum. Hence to comply with these requirements, High Pressure Sodium Lamps (HPSL) are being installed,” informed an official.
“These lamps will start functioning from November 20 and all the 95 lamps will be illuminated from 6.30 pm till 11 pm. Later, out of these 95 lamps, only 60 lamps will remain functional from 11 pm to 1 am and thereafter only 30 lamps will function from 1 am to 6 am. Timer has been installed for the operation of these lamps,” added the official.
The officials further said the State government has installed Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) at Porvorim which are having illumination level of less than 30 lux. The government should have also installed High Pressure Sodium Vapour lamps at Porvorim which would have cost Rs 25 lakh and provided better illumination.
