MARGAO: The Public Works Department (Water) has put on hold the order to disconnect water supply to nearly 195 homes in Mugali, Sao Jose de Areal. This decision comes after the housing society assured the completion of works related to sewage management.
The PWD engineer told O Heraldo that they have communicated with the Sewerage Corporation in this matter and are awaiting their response. As per the initial orders, the PWD was set to disconnect water supply to 195 homes in the Ramnagri Co-operative Housing Society, which was allegedly discharging its domestic sewage into rainwater drains and open areas, posing a health hazard for the entire village.
However, the society appealed to the Chief Minister to prevent the impending water supply disconnection. The concerned PWD engineer mentioned, “Our department had issued a notice for the disconnection of water supply to nearly 195 households in the housing society. Recently, we were informed that the society has assured to complete the works shortly to address the sewage flow issue.” He added that the office is awaiting a reply from the sewage department before taking any action, and until then, the notice will be kept on hold.
Earlier, the society members had explained that they were facing challenges due to the lack of a connection between their sewage network and the main sewage line.
Fredy Travaso, a villager, urged to stop the release of sewage in open areas and suggested measures such as collecting and disposing the sewage with the help of tankers to avoid health hazards. “Why should villagers suffer because of the faults of others? We demand that the sewage from the concerned housing society be taken away with the help of tankers,” he stated.
