MARGAO: Public Works Department officials fanned out to the 300 households in the affected areas of Margao on Friday to clean up the pipeline at the water meters to ensure clean supply.
Exactly a week after the water pipeline supplying water to Malbhat, Pajifond, Gandhi market and new market was damaged during excavation to repair a storm water drain, around four gangs comprising 50 PWD labourers, supervised by four junior engineers, went house to house to clean up the meters at the individual households on Friday. The exercise was taken up after the PWD flushed out water in the damaged pipeline after complains of foul odour.
PWD junior engineer Painginkar told Herald that the four gangs have almost completed 300 households in the Malbhat-Pajifond area, adding that meters of the remaining 50 households will be taken up for cleaning on Saturday. “The exercise is basically meant to remove the dirty and other waste accumulated at the water meters of the households. This was carried out when the underground pipeline was flushed today. The line has also been disinfected with additional chlorine”, he said.
Replying to a question, Painginkar said the PWD will give a nod for water consumption only after a green signal from the chief chemist. “The water has been tested by the department sub-chemist, but the final nod will be given only after the water samples are tested by the chief chemist, most probably on Saturday”, he added.
