PONDA: At last, the PWD on Sunday restored the original name plaques of Martyrs Memorial at Ponda’s Kranti Maidan.
It may be recalled that the name plaques laid in 1991 by the then Defence Minister Sharad Pawar, former Chief Minister Ravi Naik and the then Education Minister Subhash Shirodkar, had been reported missing for the past four years. A couple of days ago, the name plaques were found dumped near toilet blocks covered with dust.
This prompted Ponda MLA Ravi Naik to demand with PWD Chief Engineer to restore the name plaques. Naik said the name plaques had the name of defence minister and should be immediately restored.
In 2013-14 the Kranti Maidan renovation work began during when the name plaques were removed. The maidan was inaugurated in 2017 by the then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in the presence of former PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, ex-MLA Lavoo Mamledar.
Though the name plaques were installed on renovated Kranti Maidan, the original name plaques were not installed then only to be recently found dumped near the toilet blocks.
