MAPUSA: With the PWD (water division) restoring the water supply to Bardez, the residents of various parts of the taluka complained of receiving dirty water.
It may be recalled that the PWD had called for taluka-level water shutdown on April 15 and 16. However, instead of restoring the water supply on April 17, the shutdown continued for another three days causing major inconvenience to Bardez residents.
The PWD had undertaken shifting of main pipeline which supplies water to the entire taluka. The shifting of pipeline was taken up due to highway expansion.
As the PWD restored water supply to a few parts in Bardez, areas such as parts of Porvorim, Saligao and Calangute are yet to receive water. When the water supply was restored, the people complained of receiving dirty water.
Parts of Siolim, Tivim, Porvorim and Guirim received dirty water even on Wednesday.
Cecilia Thomas, a resident of Tivim said:”We started receiving water from Monday onwards. However, the water we are receiving is dirty and cannot be consumed.”
Guirim resident Ravi Naik said:”First day, we received clean water but since yesterday we are receiving dirty water. The pressure was also low and water supply was just for half hour”.
Bindu Talkar, a resident of Porvorim, said: “Two days we received dirty water but on Wednesday again there was no water supply. The government needs to look into the water issue on priority as the people are suffering badly”. Meanwhile, Karaswada has been without water for the last seven days.
The water supply has been restored in parts of Bardez, but the residents of Karaswada informed that they have not received water since the shutdown. They claimed that the PWD has failed to supply water even through tankers.
“Before taking up the work of shifting of pipeline, the government should have made provision for supplying water. Since the last seven days there is not a single drop of water. Elderly people and children are facing major inconvenience as there is no water. The PWD has not supplied water through tankers. When questioned, the tanker operator says they have hotel bookings “, complained Remedia Fernades, a resident of Karaswada.
Another lady said:”The shutdown was for two days but since last seven days we have not received water. Chief Minister visited Karaswada and assured that the water problem will be solved. I want him to visit the spot and check if people are actually receiving water. There is not a single drop of water since the last seven days and the PWD is not ready to supply water through tankers”.
