PWD, RTO & Traffic Police to prepare plan to curtail road accidents in next 15 days

Transport Minister Godinho said that his department has been taking many important decisions under the Road Safety Council.

PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday ordered the Public Works Department (PWD), Road Transport Department (RTO) and Traffic Police to jointly prepare a plan to curtail road accidents and fatalities in the State in the next 15 days. 

The Chief Minister along with Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral, Director General of Police Jaspal Singh, Inspector General of Police Ombir Singh Bishnoi were present at the discussion along with officials of various departments.

Several NGOs and general public prominently pushed for stricter licencing rules and improving the next generation of drivers/riders through addition of traffic safety in educational syllabus. 

The Chief Minister after opening the open forum and discussions with the NGOs and general public on road safety and management said, “The discussions and suggestions of NGOs and public will be recorded and a report will be compiled by the PWD, Traffic Police and Road Transport Department jointly to reduce the road accidents and fatalities. The implementation of the report’s findings will commence from December 1.”

PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral informed that his department has rectified almost 11 accident black spots over the last few months and added that there are 12 black spots, which need help from the general public and NGOs, as the land acquisition is pending. 

“In addition to that the State through Traffic Police has identified 600 stretches of roads of which most are rectified. 146 remain to be rectified. We need the civil society to try and convince some of the people to give land to rectify the remaining,” Cabral added.
