CUNCOLIM: Following a report published in O Heraldo’s August 3 edition, the Public Works Department (PWD) has taken immediate action to address the hazardous road conditions in the area.
On Sunday, the PWD began repair work and pothole patching along the affected roads on a war footing. The O Heraldo report highlighted the dangerous state of the roads, which were severely damaged due to illegal road digging carried out by a contractor for underground cabling work.
The contractor had initiated road digging activities during the monsoon season, leading to widespread damage to major district roads and internal roads within the Cuncolim Municipal Council area. This work was done in violation of the ban on road cutting after May 15, and it resulted in significant hardships for commuters.
Nearly a hundred riders and drivers were affected by the poor road conditions, with many vehicles sustaining damage and numerous individuals suffering both major and minor injuries in accidents.
In response to citizens’ demand for urgent repairs and action against the contractor, authorities acted promptly. The swift response by the PWD has been welcomed by locals, who have expressed their appreciation for the Herald’s role in bringing the issue to light and prompting the necessary repairs, which they hope will restore smoother travel for commuters in the area.
