P’yat election candidates make the maximum of Sunday campaigning

In Salcete taluka 33 village Panchayats will witness a contest between 863 candidates

MARGAO: Villages in Salcete were abuzz with hectic activity by candidates who hit the roads on door-to-door campaign reaching out to maximum of their voters on the eve of the day campaigning for the Panchayat Elections stops.

As campaigning ends on August 8, candidates made the best of the Sunday holiday in reaching out to every voter on the list.

Returning Officer (RO) of Salcete, Lakshmikant Desai informed that all the candidates will have to stop campaigning on Monday August 8 at 5 pm.

In Salcete taluka, all the 33 village panchayats will go for poll on August 10, along with 153 other panchayats in the state. Very rare moments of altercations between the supporters of candidates have been reported in Salcete pertaining to the elections campaigning.

Agostinho Fernandes, a citizen of Benaulim said that he is hoping to see a new face to represent his ward, so that new ideas are implemented for the betterment of his village in general.

“It is very shocking to note that many political leaders are trying to influence the voters in order to get their candidates elected. Actually, they should have kept themselves away from the elections of local bodies, so that the right candidate is elected,” he stated.

Roshini Naik, a senior citizen also told Herald that the candidates with a vision for the village should be elected.

“The candidates having knowledge of Goa Panchayat Raj is also an important aspect. The candidates with clean backgrounds should represent the ward, and hence the voters need to think twice before casting their votes,” she appealed.

Meanwhile, several candidates were noticed campaigning along with their supporters in Benaulim, Navelim, Carmona, Nuvem, Raia, Curtorim, and other parts of the Salcete taluka.
