MARGAO: In an attempt to deepen their understanding of tribal societies, a group of students from the Government College of Arts, Science, and Commerce, Quepem, spent days in the Kadel tribal village.
According to Assistant Professor Sayali Gaunkar, this field trip was organised with the aim of conducting an ethnographic study to comprehend the intricacies of tribal society. The trip was guided by Principal Dr Joydeep Bhattacharjee, with assistance from Assistant Prof Fabiola Fernandes.
The excursion focused on the art of ethnographic research, offering students firsthand experience in engaging with and comprehending the lifestyles of tribal communities.
The highlight of the field trip was the immersive experience of living a day in the life of the Kadel tribe. Students actively participated in various activities, including traditional cooking, handicraft making, and communal lunch gatherings. These interactions provided invaluable opportunities to understand the nuances of tribal life, from intricate culinary practices to communal decision-making processes, noted Gaunkar.
She further emphasised that the trip served as a catalyst for personal and academic growth, fostering a deeper understanding of the dynamics of tribal societies and highlighting the invaluable role of ethnographic research in unraveling their intricacies.
