Curchorem: Residents of Quepem are worried about the poor condition of the main road from Tilamol junction near the Our Lady of Mother of Poor Church to Karally.
They claim that the maximum portion of the road from Curchorem to Margao has been hot-mixed but about 3 kms stretch of the road from Tilamol junction to Karally and some portion from Sao Jose de Areal to Dicarpale near the Military camp has been left and not hot-mixed for more than three years now. The situation is causing severe inconvenience to motorists.
“The tender was issued last year to hot mix the road from Tilamol to Karally but till now nothing has been done in spite of several requests to the PWD,” said Evangelist DaCosta of the Quepem Citizen Committee, while urging the local MLA and Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar to intervene.
Quepem Councillor Amol Kanekar said it’s a pity that the road was neglected even though it falls under Kavlkear’s constituency. “We were expecting Quepem would get different colours after our MLA joined the ruling dispensation but Quepem still suffers as usual,” quipped Kanekar.
Hoping that work would be done before the monsoon, councillor Manuel Colaco said the road, particularly behind the Quepem police station to Karally needs immediate attention.
Quepem Chairperson Dayesh Naik said, “We instructed the contractor to complete the work of road widening and only after that to hot-mix the road, so that the road is not dug up again. The completion of road widening got little delayed due to the lockdown period, which should have been completed by now.”
“Due to the lockdown, there were issues with the supply of the required material and other activities could not be undertaken as well, as a result of which, everything got delayed. But l will still talk to the officials concerned and see if it is possible to complete the work before the onset of the monsoon,” said Kavlekar.
