PONDA: News of fraud of several crores of rupees at Quepem Urban Co-operative Credit Society Ltd, Shiroda branch, caused panic among the investors with many of them reportedly rushing to the Shiroda branch on Tuesday morning with the intention to withdraw their money.
Many account holders were in panic and worried for their deposits and were seen enquiring with their friends about the incident. Except for discussions on the issue, peaceful situation prevailed in Shiroda.
Besides other borrowers, it is learnt that five members who had borrowed loan against depositing gold are from the family of the appraisal officer, who was authorised to certify the gold.
There were rumours that some depositors, concerned over the issue, reportedly approached the Shiroda branch with applications to withdraw their deposits.
Many people were seen asking media persons how many depositors will have to face the police enquiry and when the case will be transferred to the police.
When contacted, Society Chairman Prakash Velip said no depositors withdrew their deposits from the Shiroda branch.
“All is well and our society is having 21 branches all over the State and about 80,000 account holders. Despite the incident, the depositors have shown faith in us,” added Velip.
“We will recover the loss on account of gold within 4 to 5 month. The Society is financially strong enough to handle the situation and people and depositors should not worry,” urged Velip. When contacted, Ponda PI C L Patil said till late Tuesday evening no complaint was received.
However, Velip said they are verifying the documents to ascertain the defaulters, who are involved in the case, and thereafter complaint will be lodged with the police within next two days.
