Rabies mukt Goa: Locals demand vaccination of stray dogs

PONDA: While mission rabies vaccination has been started in Goa by providing rabies vaccine to pet dog for ‘rabies mukth Goa,’ large number of villagers have demanded give anti rabies vaccine to stray dogs for rabies free Goa. 

The rabies-free programme is being carried out across the state by Mission Rabies in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Department of the State Government and awareness has been created on Friday in Marcaim constituency for anti-rabies vaccination of pet dogs in every house.

Power Minister Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar while speaking at the function at Bandora Panchayat too spoke in favour of anti rabies vaccine to stray dogs for ‘rabies mukth Goa’.  Dhavalikar told organizers that for Goa to be free from rabies, it is necessary to deal with stray dogs.

It may be recalled that the stray dog bite cases reported at Ponda Sub District Hospital are almost around 100 cases per month which is an alarming rate. The  stray dog population is growing  rapidly in the state such that it is dangerous to ride a bike or walk alone at night. Accidents are taking place as these stray dogs packs, chase bike riders, pedestrians and frighten senior citizens and children.  Therefore, the locals present in large number for function demanded that the stray dogs population  should be controlled and vaccinated.
