Rag picker held in Altinho govt quarters theft case

PANJIM: In another breakthrough in the spate of thefts at Altinho government quarters, Panjim Police on Thursday arrested a ragpicker and seized gold ornaments and mobile phones, worth Rs 2 lakh.
The alleged accused has been identified as Alex D’Souza, aged 24 years and a native of Mangalore. “He is usually found at the municipal market in Mapusa picking rags. We zeroed in on him after a number of persons were interrogated and evidence collected. He confessed to the crime. The team recovered several mobile phones and gold ornaments from his possession, valued at Rs 2 lakh,” Panjim PI Siddhant Shirodkar said. The accused will undergo custodial interrogation after being produced before the court for police custody.
The investigation team had last month detained another Karnataka native Steven Karabannavar for the offence. He was also found with a stolen car with fake number plate. Shirodkar said the suspect was later released on bail, however, the car, which is registered in Karnataka, is in the custody of the police. 
Three flats were targeted by in October but only one complainant came forward to lodge a police complaint.
