MARGAO: A rag picker stabbed his friend to death and then attempted to flee from the spot in Kharebandh. Margao Police traced him within three hours while trying to flee the town.
On October 3 at around 11.30 pm, the Public Control Room (PCR) received a call that a fight was going on at Khareband. Immediately Margao Town PS staff reached the spot but no one was around.
Later, Joseph Colaco, owner of a nearby bar, informed the police that at about 11.15 pm a quarrel had taken place between two labourers/scrap collectors on the footpath near Johnson Bar, Khareband. One person namely “Yellappa Karbal”, aged between 40 to 50 years (labourer) rag-picker allegedly stabbed another labourer (scrap collector) namely “Kumar” with a knife. Both were reportedly friends but an altercation between the duo resulted into the stabbing. Kumar approached the bar owner and informed him that he was stabbed with a knife. The victim reportedly later succumbed to his injuries.
After stabbing the victim, the accused had fled away from the spot. After an offence u/s 302 of IPC was registered, police swung into action.
A team was immediately formed under the supervision of PI Margao Town Sachin Narvekar and comprising PSI Sagar Dhatkar, PSI Vishwajeet Dhavlikar and others. The accused was traced within three hours of committing the alleged crime.
The team fanned out through the streets of Margao Town and began hunting for the accused. After around three hours of intensive search, the accused was traced near the railway track trying to flee the town.
Investigation revealed that the quarrel broke out between the two friends over repayment of a loan of Rs 1000.
Further investigation is in progress. The body of the deceased has been preserved in the TB Hospital Mortuary.
