RAIA: The residents of Raia celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Snows popularly known as Konsanchem Fest on August 5 at Our Lady of Snows Church. The cutting of first corn took place on the occasion which is offered to Our Lady of Snows. The main celebrant for the occasion was His Grace Rev.. Fr. Simião Purificação Fernandes, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman who blessed the first corn and cut too.
Vincy Quadros stated, “The tradition of cutting the corn prevailed under the Gaunkari system before the Portuguese came to Goa in 1510. The first conversion was done in 1560. Thereafter when the Christian population grew, a church was erected in Raia in 1576. Initially, it was a makeshift church. But then in 1596 a proper structure was built. Thereafter the comunidade give a place and a church was built in 1699.”
“From about 1970, the parish priest started cutting the corn. Today the Auxiliary Bishop His Grace Simiao Fernandes cut the corn. This will go on,” Quadros said.
