Raia water crisis: 30-year-old pipeline has sprung multiple leaks from Selaulim to Vasco, reveals PWD inspection

Apart from the wastage of potable water, residents of Manora-Raia also worry that the pipeline may burst if not repaired in time, and lead to flooding in low-lying areas

MARGAO: Following the issue brought to light by

O Heraldo, officials from the Public Works Department (Water Supply) visited the site in Manora-Raia, where thousands of litres of water have been wasted due to pipeline leakage.

They have decided to propose immediate repair works. Assistant Engineer Shanu Gaonkar, accompanied by his team, visited the site on Tuesday to assess the situation.

However, it has now been revealed that the water pipeline, which is almost 30 years old, is experiencing leakage not only in one or two places but at multiple locations from Selaulim to Vasco. Leakages can be found on the joints of every other pipe laid down along this stretch.

Shockingly, the wastage of water will continue until the department identifies a suitable time to shut down the water supply, which is necessary to facilitate the pipeline repairs. Gaonkar informed O Heraldo that a comprehensive report on the pipeline leakage, including multiple locations, has been prepared. A proposal for repair works has been submitted to higher authorities, urging immediate action.

“I have personally inspected the site, but it will be challenging to pinpoint the exact locations of the leakages in the pipeline. Importantly, we cannot begin the repair work unless the water supply through this pipeline is completely shut down,” he stated.

Gaonkar further mentioned that they are now awaiting instructions from higher authorities to coordinate the repair work for all identified leakages.

It is important to note that residents in Manora-Raia are expressing concerns that if the leakage continues, the pipeline could burst, leading to flooding in low-lying areas.
