Raia’s agriculture camp to help villagers set up kitchen gardens, boost food security

The panchayat has even planned to engage senior citizens in kitchen garden activities at their homes so that they remain occupied and also develop food security, and the time spent outdoors would also help keep them fit and healthy.

MARGAO: Setting an example to all the other panchayats of Goa, the village panchayat of Raia will be going all out to ensure food security by promoting agriculture, especially the kitchen garden concept, amongst the villagers, with a day-long agricultural camp organised by the panchayat on Saturday.

Being a farmer himself, Judas Quadros, Sarpanch of Raia, informed Herald that this camp will be a unique opportunity to learn farming techniques from the best in the business.

“The highlights of the camp will be kitchen gardening, organic manure production, home composting techniques and awareness of government agricultural schemes,” he said.

The above camp is being organised in association with the Directorate of Agriculture.

Taking into consideration the large number of farmers in the village, the Panchayat body decided to promote agriculture at the panchayat level,

so that farmers as well as other villagers are encouraged to grow their own fruit and vegetables instead

of  depending on produce from

other States.

The panchayat has even planned to engage senior citizens in kitchen garden activities at their homes so that they remain occupied and also develop food security, and the time spent outdoors would also help keep them fit and healthy.
