Railway underpass commissioned at Guirdolim

MARGAO: The long demanded railway underpass at Guirdolim was finally commissioned, on Saturday. But the underpass cannot be used as some work is yet to be completed and the motorists will have to wait for at least another month.

Built at the cost of Rs 2.5 crore, the underpass will replace the level crossing better known as LC-18 that exists just before the Chandor Station. It has been causing a lot of problem for the people as the frequency of trains has increased substantially since the railway track was converted to broad gauge.

Now that the railways have undertaken the work of double tracking of the South Western Railway line, the level crossing was bound to be closed down permanently and the underpass was taken up for construction.

However, the approach roads for the underpass are yet to be constructed and this is expected to take at least another month, according to the officials of Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd.

Interestingly, the level crossing will be permanently dismantled only after the rail overbridge at Chandor is constructed and till then the underpass will be an option available to the motorists.
