PANJIM: The rain on Saturday may have brought down the mercury in several parts of Goa, but it played spoilsport somewhere else! Tempers ran high on Sunday as beef traders experienced a “dry day” of sorts when the Goa Meat Complex failed to maintain its supply.
Like several parts in Goa, “Due to sudden showers on Saturday night, power supply was interrupted. The staff managed to restore emergency power around 8am on Sunday and thereafter we transported meat,” said Goa Meat Complex, managing director Dr UVT Pednekar.
Pednekar, acknowledging the failure, said due to technical reasons, beef couldn’t be supplied on time.
Quraishi Meat Traders’ Association (QMTA) President Manna Bepari, however, said the complex vehicle reached the shops around noon and by then it was too late as most customers had left and the traders incurred huge losses.
Bepari said, “Traders across the state have incurred losses to the tune of Rs 15 to Rs 20 lakh as we couldn’t do business despite being a Sunday.”
He further said, “Sundays are the most busiest days for us and customers start pouring in from as early as 7 am.”
He squarely blamed the Goa Meat Complex management for the loss.
“The management is aware that Sundays are very important business days and yet they didn’t care to take corrective measures on time and ensure that meat was supplied to the traders. All the shops in Goa lost business because of their mismanagement,” he alleged.
