Rain triggers coal slide, 1 labourer dies in MPT

VASCO: In a tragic incident that was reported early on Friday, two workers who were removing tarpaulin sheets from the coal stack at Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) premises got trapped under the consignment, leaving one person dead while the other seriously injured.
According to Cottage Hospital, Chicalim, sources, around 4.30 am one person was brought dead to the hospital from the port area. Police investigation revealed that the incident was reported around 1.45 am when two contract labourers were removing the tarpaulin sheet used to cover the coal stack. 
“Two labourers, Dilip Das, 34, and Kushad Ali, 34, both from Jharkhand, were engaged in removing tarpaulin sheets from the coal stacks at JSW operational area inside MPT. Suddenly due to heavy rainfall, the coal from the heap started sliding and it (coal) fell on both the labourers. Immediately, the safety team engaged by the JSW rushed to the site and with the help of excavator machinery both the trapped labourers were removed,” said PSI Melito Fernandes who is investigating officer of the case.
He further said, “While Kushal Ali was admitted at the private hospital where he is stable, Dilip Das was referred to Cottage Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. Since the incident was reported inside the port area, I have asked the JSW officials to provide me with the details of safety measures among other things. Once I receive the same, we will take a call on whether a case has to be registered or not. Presently, a case of unnatural death has been registered. Family members of Das have been intimated and further investigation is in progress” Fernandes said.
