Rainfall Hits Goa: Mormugao Tops with 68.2mm

The rainfall that swept across Goa on Sunday evening, numerous places witnessed a significant downpour, with Mormugao emerging as the rainiest spot recording a whopping 68.2mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period ending at 0830 hrs IST on May 20, 2024.

The capital city, Panaji, wasn’t far behind, experiencing a drenching with 55.4mm of rainfall. Valpoi followed suit with 38.4mm, while Margao and Mapusa registered 37.3mm and 26.0mm respectively, making them some of the wettest areas in the state.

Dabolim, known for its international airport, faced a substantial rainfall of 25.8mm, whereas Canacona and Sanquelim experienced 21.2mm and 14.6mm respectively.

Other regions including Ponda (14.0mm), Pernem (12.4mm), Sanguem (9.7mm), Quepem (8.0mm), and Ela (Old Goa) (7.0mm) also encountered varying degrees of precipitation.

The incessant rainfall has led to concerns over potential flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and take necessary precautions during this spell of heavy rain.

As the monsoon season looms closer, the state government is ramping up its efforts to ensure readiness in dealing with any eventualities arising from heavy rainfall and its aftermath.
