PANJIM: After a hiatus of a few days, heavy rains lashed Goa over the last two days leaving many areas water logged. Over 8 inches of rainfall in the last 48-hours led to inundation of several roads and localities, slowing down traffic and causing inconvenience to the pedestrians.

The southwest monsoon crossed the 50-inch mark in the State that has recorded over 53 inches of rains since June 1 till date, which is two per cent above the normal.

The monsoon that had slightly weakened over the past few days across Goa, made a comeback on July 10, with the formation of three different systems – a cyclonic circulation over South Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts, a low pressure area over Saurashtra coast and neighbourhood and an east¬west shear zone between 2.1 kms and 5.8 kms above mean sea level tilting southwards.

The continuous rains exposed the “Panjim Smart City” development as major portions of the city were inundated. Areas like St Inez, Patto Plaza, Mala, Miramar circle, remained under water causing major hardship to the commuters.

IMD Goa in-charge Rahul said the increased rainfall activity is very likely to continue over Goa up to around July 17, with an orange colour warning in place till July 15.

As Panjim witnessed water logging and flooding, the lower court functioning from Spaces Building took up only those matters where orders were to be passed.

“On account of unprecedented rainfall and water logging near Spaces Building, matters are adjourned, except the order matter will be taken up. Hence request to check the CIS for dates accordingly,” a notice outside CJJD & JMFC ‘D’ Court stated.
