PANJIM: After recording a dip in rainfall activities in August, the monsoon has picked up in the first week of September, with Goa receiving heavy to very heavy rains since Sunday. Till date the month has recorded on an average at least an inch of rain every day.
With the likely formation of a low pressure area over North & adjoining Central Bay of Bengal, the monsoon activity has strengthened over South Konkan and Goa. IMD Goa has put the coastal State on orange alert till Tuesday, with the possibility of very heavy rainfall, exceeding 11.5cm in 24 hours.
IMD Goa observatory in-charge Rahul said that the State will continue to receive showers, exceeding 6.4 cm in 24 hours, till September 10, however, the impact will reduce from September 9 onwards.
As per IMD records, since September 1, the State has recorded 6 inches (153mm) of rainfall.
With increased rainfall activity to continue, IMD has said that areas vulnerable to landslides and flooding may be monitored. “Water levels in rivers and reservoirs may be monitored and necessary precautions may kindly be taken,” IMD said.
In the last 48 hours, the State recorded 2.43 inches of rainfall. Rainfall was recorded in almost every station that saw above 10mm of rainfall.
Meanwhile, the season rainfall has touched its normal average with total 108.5 inches (2757.1mm) of rains being recorded till date.
