Rains pound the State; Margao flooded

Normal life thrown off gear; Roads inundated and low-lying areas submerged; People stay indoors

PANJIM/MARGAO: Rains continued to pound the State on Sunday throwing the normal life out of gear for the seventh consecutive day leaving several roads inundated and low-lying areas submerged as people preferred to remain indoors. 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Altinho extended its red alert warning till Monday. 

Most parts of Goa received heavy rains throughout the day. Mormugao recorded highest 148.0 mm rainfall followed by Old Goa with 138.5 mm, Panjim (113.2 mm), Canacona (84.0 mm) and Pernem (70.5 mm). 

During the last 24 hours, three inches of rainfall was recorded while, 20 inches rainfall was recorded during last one week. 

The IMD stated that rainfall in the State has exceeded 111.5 cms in last 24 hours. 

Heavy rainfall will continue for next week due to some low pressure systems developed near Bay of Bengal, it said.

The IMD stated that there could be rise in water level in rivers and canals resulting overflowing of water which may damage crops. 

Meanwhile, Salcete lead to the inundation of several low-lying areas; River Sal also witnessed overflowing into the fields and open areas resulting in major damage to the crops. 

Road from Arlem Church to Arlem junction, besides several other internal and National Highway roads were inundated on Sunday. From the Margao Bolshe circle to Chowgule College junction, Colva circle at the Old Market, Margao, the road at Margao Municipal building, Rawanfond to Mandop, besides at Colmorod-Margao, were totally submerged under rain waters. 

The rainwater along with leachate from the Sonsoddo garbage dump was seen flowing towards road near the college. Margao’s New Market area, Malbhat, Kharebhand, Azad Nagar, Power House, Old Margao railway station road, and areas in Fatorda were also flooded.
