PANJIM: Incessant and heavy to very heavy rains lashed the state, inundating large parts of the state especially low lying areas of the capital. Besides the damage caused due to water entering houses , trees being uprooted and roads washed away, a 50-year-old resident of Salgaokarwadda, Mandrem, was feared drowned after he was washed away at Sadchem, Bhatlem-Mandrem, early Saturday morning. Three rivers Galgibaga, Talpona and Saleri were flowing above the danger mark and landslides hit the Sada jetty at Vasco.
These rains are going to continue till September 2 before they begin to subside, the Met department said Saturday. It has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state on Sunday and fishermen have been advised not to venture in the sea for the next 24 hours as the sea will be rough.
The quantum of rain was such that in three odd days it made up for the deficit as recorded by the Metrological Department, putting the rainfall till date at normal.
The Fire Department attended to many as 75 emergency calls with 30 calls registered on Saturday alone.
Incessant rainfall for the last 36 hours caused landslide at Jetty Sada in Mormugao. The rains brought down huge boulders along with some trees, blocking the national highway leading to MPT.
On Friday, a bar at Saligao caught fire after an electricity pole fell onto it, which was a result of heavy showers. Fortunately there were no casualties, but the damage to the property is estimate about Rs 3 lakh.
