MARGAO: Heavy unseasonal rains and gusty winds lashed Salcete on Sunday night; as a result tree falls were reported at several places, causing loss of lakh of rupees. The roofing sheets of Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, were also blown off.
Fire fighters from Fire and Emergency Services, Margao were on the run to attend the calls till late evening on Monday, as they recorded nearly 20 calls on tree fall in the taluka.
Heavy rains with thunder, lightning and gusty winds were witnessed at around 10.30 pm in various parts of the Salcete Taluka. The incident of uprooting of trees on roads and houses were reported.
“We have received calls from Colva, Navelim, Fatorda, Comba and other places pertaining to tree falls due to the gusty winds,” said officer of Fire and Emergency Services.
He further informed that they were yet to attend nearly eight more cases of tree falls.
Further gusty winds also resulted in blowing off the roofing sheets of Nehru Stadium. These fiber sheets fell in the vicinity of the stadium. Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident.
“I received a call from the security person informing me about the incident. A casualty has been reported, but the loss of lakhs of rupees is calculated due to damage of sheets,” said Rajesh Naik, Assistant Director (Sports), Nehru Stadium at Fatorda.
He further informed that the incident will be reported to Disaster Management, South in order to take further precautions.
Meanwhile, many areas were in the dark till 2.30 am in the night, due to no power supply.
