MARGAO: Heavy rainfall lashed Salcete taluka from the early hours of Monday, causing the overflow of River Sal into surrounding fields and open areas and the inundation of several low-lying areas.
Margao’s New Market area, Malbhat, Khareband, Azad Nagar, Power House, Old Margao railway station road, and the surrounding areas of Arlem and Navelim were also flooded. In Margao, muddy rainwater entered the employment exchange and Government Printing Press Offices at the South Goa District Collectorate, angering staff and citizens visiting the government building. “It is shocking to witness the pathetic condition of both these offices, wherein rainwater has stagnated on the floor. This has been going on for the last two years”, said Franky D’Melo, who had come to the printing press for some work.
Rainwater along with foul-smelling leachate from the Sonsoddo garbage dump was seen flowing on the roads, holding up traffic in the area. People commuting across the Zuari bridge were also stranded for over an hour as the Cortalim junction turned into a bottleneck, with bumper-to-bumper traffic stretching from Verna to Agasaim on Monday evening.
