PANJIM: Elected representatives lure voters by allowing illegalities and then get them regularized, by misusing democracy, Leader of Opposition Pratapsing Rane charged on the floor of the House on Monday, targeting legislators for supporting regularization of illegal constructions that are mushrooming in the State.
“Come elections, governments regularize illegal constructions and structures…. Every elected leader comes under pressure, they want votes … so they can’t say no…. If you say no, people won’t vote for you,” Rane said while moving a cut motion on the demand for grants for civil supplies, where he underlined government’s failure in weeding out bogus ration card users.
Rane said that with illegal constructions mushrooming, every individual through support from the elected representative gets his(her) ration card and voter’s card done, which is bogus. “Elected representatives misuse power of democracy,” Rane alleged, demanding immediate steps to take action against bogus ration card holders. He also accused the government of failure in digitization of ration cards.
While moving a cut motion on the demand for grants for water resources, Rane also slammed the government over the delay in completing the Tillari irrigation water project, which would facilitate water supply to talukas of Bardez, Pernem and parts of Bicholim.
He informed the House that the project was set to be completed way back in 1992. “I also tried my best to complete the project during my tenure (as chief minister),” he said.
