PANJIM: Raw sewage is flowing in a trench near Madhuban Circle in St Inez raising a stink and posing a health hazard in the area.
The trench was dug up to construct drains and to lay utility lines reportedly under the Smart City Mission, however, currently the site has been demobilised and abandoned by the contractor concerned.
People having commercial establishments along the particular road stretch are worst affected as their customers are shying away due to unbearable stench. The locals in the area fear outbreak of vector-borne diseases as their plea to the authorities concerned have fallen on deaf ears.
“Mosquito breeding here will lead to health hazard as the trench is full of raw sewage. The open trench is also posing a risk of commuters or pedestrians falling into it. The authorities concerned should address the issue at the earliest,” said Dr Maria Tereza Veiga, who runs her clinic in the area.
“We have conveyed our grievance to the local Councillor and also raised this issue with the PWD engineer concerned and the Smart City contractor but no action has been taken. The CCP administration should look into this and address the issue,” a local said.
A senior engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) informed that an inspection was done recently by the engineer concerned and it was found that there is no leakage from the sewer lines of the PWD.
The engineer further said that the raw sewage could be flowing into the trench as a result of damaged internal sewer lines of the adjacent residential complex.
“We have brought to the notice of the CCP Mayor about the sewage mess in St Inez. He has assured to call the parties concerned and get the issue resolved in a couple of days,” an official of the CCP said.
