Rebuked for drinking liquor, father jumps into well

Remorseful son consumes poison; both die

SANGUEM: The villagers of remote Dapodem ward of Bhati Village in Sanguem taluka were shocked and surprised over the double suicide incident in the village wherein a father and son duo committed suicide over petty issue. 
The incident took place in the late evening hours on Friday September 21.
Sources informed that Chandrakant Gaonkar (57) had come home drunk state which irritated his son Suresh (27). As father was in an intoxicated state, Suresh asked his father as to why he was drinking and disturbing peace at home.
This allegedly resulted in some verbal abuses between the son and father and in a fit of anger, Chandrakant Gaonkar jumped into an open well located close to their house.
Subsequently Suresh, who saw his father jumping into well also followed suit in a bid to save his father and get him back home. However, as Suresh couldn’t retrieve his father’s body, he was left disappointed and sensing that the blame of his father’s death would come on him, he rushed back home and ended his life by taking poison.
Immediately, after getting the information of the suicide incident, Sanguem Police led by PSI Manoj Malik and ASI Arvind Nagvekar rushed to the site, conducted a panchanama, took the body of Suresh into their possession and sent it to Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital at Bambolim for post mortem.
Simultaneously, a search operation was launched to trace the body of Chandrakant Gaonkar in the well. However, it being late, the search operations were continued on Saturday morning with the help of fire brigade personnel who retrieved the body of Chandrakant Gaonkar in the afternoon hours. 
After the panchanama, the body of Chandrakant Gaonkar was also sent to GMC for post mortem.
Incidentally, the mother of Chandrakant Gaonkar had expired a month back and the family was still coming to terms with her loss.
