Red alert on June 14 for Goa

Heavy rainfall expected till June 16; Suggests monitoring of areas vulnerable for landslide, flooding

PANJIM: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa has issued a red alert for the State on Monday.

IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on Sunday.

While the red alert as of now is for Monday, IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall for Tuesday and Wednesday. Red alert is the highest form of alert issued by IMD.

IMD says that as forecasted on June 7 and 9, a low pressure area formed over North Bay of Bengal on June 11 and is likely to become more marked during the coming 24 hours and move west-northwest wards during the next 2-3 days. “The movement of the low pressure area, the existing offshore trough and the strengthened westerly winds along the west coast are going to result in continued rainfall activity over Konkan and Goa,” IMD said in a statement.

“The increased rainfall activity is likely to continue for about five days from June 12. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely with scattered distribution over both districts. Also, extremely heavy rainfall is very likely at one or two places on June 13 and 14. Winds of speed around 40kmph are likely along with rainfall spells. With increased rainfall activity to continue, areas vulnerable for landslide and flooding may be kept under monitoring and necessary precautions may be taken,” IMD added.

IMD will be monitoring the situation and giving regular forecasts given the red alert warning.
