Red chillies price up 20 to 30% in Ponda

PONDA: With less production and more demand, the prices of red chillies have skyrocketed by at least 20 to 30 per cent in Ponda. The prices vary from Rs 700 to Rs 1,000 per kg depending upon the quality of the chillies.

Explaining the trend, vendors from Kavlem said, “Unseasonal rain in the past two-three months and pest attacks on the crop have led to a 20 per cent drop in the red chilli production as such the prices of the fiery spice has skyrocketed in the market.”

“This year, the rates will stay on the higher side as the farm produce of red chilli has gone down by 20 per cent.” 

One Kavlem housewife said, “With the rise in prices of essentials and now red chillies, it has affected the budget of common man.
