Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has urged District Collector, South to initiate appropriate steps to ensure that scrapyards are not permitted along the Arlem-Nuvem bypass in public interest and to preserve the existing agricultural and horticultural activities.
Strongly objecting to attempts being made by some parties to utilise a portion of the low-lying land on either side of the Arlem-Nuvem bypass for dumping of scrap material, Lourenco reminded the authorities that such scrapyards have become centre points of antisocial activities in the state.
Saying that opening of scrapyards should be discouraged by all means, the Curtorim MLA said the waste material dumped in low lying area used by the locals for promotion of agriculture and horticulture will be against the interests of local farming community.
A copy of the representation has been forwarded to the Revenue Minister with a request to instruct the district Collector of South Goa and other competent authorities to initiate appropriate steps immediately against the illegal activity.
