MARGAO: Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco while being distressed at the Congress’ “virtual decimation” at the national level, expressed happiness over the party’s success in South Goa Lok Sabha constituency and was exhilarated that the 25-year-old domination of BJP over Panjim has ended.
In a press release issued he congratulated the people of South Goa for giving a fitting reply to the “non-performing” MP Narendra Sawaikar while at the same time also rejecting the vote splitting attempt of another political party.
Pointing out that at Mandrem and Shiroda defectors were re-elected, he wondered whether this would put a premium on corruption and insincerity in Goan politics. However, while congratulating all the winning candidates including those of the BJP, he said the people of Goa have high expectations from them and will be watching them closely.
He appealed to Congress workers not to be disheartened by the results but instead take stock of the situation and reorganise to take up other challenges including future elections. He also stressed the need to keep aside ego and provide direction and motivation to the grassroots workers which he said was the true burden and responsibility of the party leadership.
He said that since the people deemed it fit to make the Congress the opposition, it is now time for the party to be alert and vibrant opposition and urged for a get-together to thrash out all differences and identify the “strengths and weaknesses so that proper strategies can be worked out.”
